We are an informal group of people who play social tennis on Monday nights. Some come regularly, others when the mood takes them. The emphasis is on providing a relaxed, friendly environment for social tennis and accommodating players of different standards.
Playing is not mandatory. It is quite ok to come along to socialise. Some people go out for dinner to an Asian restaurant afterwards.
The group was started in September 1978 and tennis has been played on Monday nights since then. Tennis is played every Monday unless it rains heavily, or a major holiday like Christmas or New Year’s Eve falls on a Monday. Even on a cold Canberra winter evening there will be 12-16 players.
We are also known for running the annual gay Bushdance at the Yarralumla Woolshed, which we have been doing since 1984. The money made from Bushdance is used to support our tennis activities and each year funds are also granted to other LGBTI community groups.
The Canberra Gay and Lesbian Tennis Club is an incorporated community association in the Australian Capital Territory.
